The tuition fee for academic year 2020-2021 is € 938,80* for both EEA and non-EEA students. (*subject to changes)

Scholarships and Grants

VUB Scholarships for European Master of Science in Photonics

Each year the Vrije Universiteit Brussels grants several full scholarships of 10.000,- EUR/academic year for the European Master of Science in Photonics program. Every international student enrolling at VUB can apply for these scholarships.

Every application will be screened on excellence and motivation.

All candidates enrolling at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel will have the opportunity to show proof of their technical knowledge during a scholarship interview preceding the final admission.

VUB B-PHOT Excellence Scholarships
B-PHOT, the Brussels Photonics Research group at VUB, also offer scholarships to excellent students on a competitive basis. All students who register for the European MSc. in Photonics at VUB are eligible to be awarded a B-PHOT Excellence Scholarship of 5.000,- EUR/academic year by the research group without a separate application procedure.

The scholarships will be awarded by the VUB program board.

All candidates who receive the VUB Scholarship or the B-PHOT Excellence Scholarship must commit themselves to do a master thesis at VUB.

Students who graduate with honours will be invited to apply for a Ph.D. at VUB B-PHOT.

UGent Photonics Excellence Grants

For the academic year 2019-2020 the Research Groups at Ghent University will grant 5 UGent Photonics Excellence Grants to students of the European Master of Science in Photonics at UGent. The Excellence Grant is worth 5000,- EUR/academic year.

Furthermore, students who excel during the first academic year will be offered -during their second year – a  teaching position at Ghent University to mentor the new class of first-year students.

Every application will be screened on the basis of excellence and motivation.

All candidates enrolling at Ghent University will have the opportunity to show proof of their technical knowledge during the application interview preceding the final admission.  The scholarships will be awarded by the UGent program board.

The candidates who receive the Photonics Excellence Grant must commit themselves to do a master thesis at UGent

More scholarship and grants programmes

Next to grants available in your home country, there are Flemish, Belgian and European programmes that support students financially.

Erasmus+ credit mobility scholarships (commonly known as Erasmus grants) are available for the exchange period of 1 or 2 semesters in the second year of our master supporting the mandatory European mobility component.   Students who are eligible for reduced enrolment fees, such as students with a scholarship from the Flemish Community of Belgium, will receive an additional 100€/month during their stay abroad.

Cost of living

The average cost of living amounts around € 750 per month (depending on the amount of house-rent, food cost, leisure, etc.). Student rooms at VUB Campus are available at around € 300/month, timely registration before 1 May (and thus admission & enrollment) is required.
